I’m self taught so I just had to google what satin stitches were so forgive if I’m talking about the wrong thing. I guess you’re referring to some of my book covers where I use one stitch to cover the whole width or height of a letter (or something similar), in which case I ‘back’ my pieces before photographing or scanning them, usually I use a layer of felt wadding and then a piece of grey board and pull the piece tightly around those (I often use drawing pins to pull the fabric taught and pin it to the board). This makes longer stitches lie flat rather than bobbling up. If you meant just keeping the lines in longer stitches straight I just make sure to count the thread between each stitch so they’re all the same distance.
